Issue Position: Campaign Finance Reform

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

Our Republic is based upon an active citizenry who participate in the democratic process. The foundation of which is one person, one vote and majority rules. The impact of money is polluting and distorting that process and our system very clearly needs reform. Without meaningful reform, ordinary citizens will continue to be marginalized, imperiling our democracy.

The principles for effective reform are: full disclosure and transparency of all political donations while preserving giving limits on individuals and Political Action Committees (PACs), prohibition of outside expenditures focusing accountability squarely on candidates and finally, capping the total expenditure level of individual candidate campaigns through the use of an algorithm that accounts for variance in the cost across media markets.

Meaningful reform will likely require a constitutional amendment, thoughtful legislative efforts in Congress, and bureaucratic reform at the Federal Election Commission.
